She's a student at our partner center in Málaga, <a href="https://es.linkedin.com/company/algorithmics-espa%C3%B1a?trk=public_post-text" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">Algorithmics España</a>.<br /><br />It didn't start with anything serious. She was building games in Roblox Studio because it was fun. But somewhere along the way, the games got her hooked on the harder part — the logic, figuring out why something didn't work, fixing it. That's the stuff that stuck.<br /><br />Now she's headed to the final of the International Logic Olympiad, which is being held on the Stanford campus this year. Not bad for someone who started out making Roblox games in her spare time.<br /><br />Most parents don't realize the coding itself was almost secondary. What Gloria actually learned was how to sit with a problem. Try something, watch it fail, find the bug, try again. She put it better than we could:<br /><br />"Programming taught me not to give up — and to enjoy hard challenges."<br /><br />That's really what we're after at Algorithmics. Not kids who can memorize commands, but kids who learn to think their way through things. Gloria's not a one-off. The patterns below reflect real demand across that network during the 2025/26 school year — what families chose, at what age, in which markets, and when.</div><h2  class="t-redactor__h2">The products that fill a classroom</h2><div class="t-redactor__text">Four courses account for close to 70% of everything families enroll their children in. If you are deciding where to focus, this is it.</div><div class="t-redactor__text"><strong>Python Start (23% of enrollment, ages 12–13)</strong> is the network's best-selling course. This is the age when coding stops feeling like a toy and starts feeling like a skill with a future attached—and when parents start paying for that future.</div><div class="t-redactor__text"><strong>Visual Programming / Scratch (21%, ages 9–10)</strong> is the entry point for most children and the top-of-funnel product for any school. Block-based coding lets kids build real games and animations before they can type quickly, so it fills the most beginner seats.</div><div class="t-redactor__text"><strong>Game Design (18%, ages 10–11)</strong> turns what every child already loves—playing games—into making them. Roblox and Lua deliver fast, visible results, which keeps demand strong and word of mouth working.</div><div class="t-redactor__text"><strong>Artificial Intelligence (7%, ages 12–15)</strong> is the newest of the four and this year's growth story.</div><div class="t-redactor__text">Together, these four give a new school a proven core: a beginner magnet (Scratch), a crowd-pleaser (Game Design), a serious flagship (Python), and a fast-rising draw (AI).</div><h2  class="t-redactor__h2">The courses we keep small — and why</h2><div class="t-redactor__text">Some courses — video content creation, graphic design, and a few others — draw only a small slice of enrollment. That is a choice, not a weakness, and it matters for anyone planning a school's economics.</div><div class="t-redactor__text">Algorithmics concentrates its catalog on programming and AI for three reasons that translate directly into revenue:</div><div class="t-redactor__text"><ul><li data-list="bullet"><strong>Programming and AI carry the career story parents pay for.</strong> When a parent enrolls a child in Python or AI, they're buying a future skill, not a hobby. That willingness to pay is what supports steady tuition and renewals year after year.</li><li data-list="bullet"><strong>They form an unbroken multi-year ladder.</strong> From first logic at age 6 to shipping real software at 18, the core courses connect into a path a child can climb for a decade. Creative one-off courses don't build that retention — the programming ladder does.</li><li data-list="bullet"><strong>A focused lineup is easier to launch and sell.</strong> A new partner can open, staff, and market a tight core of proven courses far more easily than a sprawling catalog. The smaller courses work well as seasonal add-ons and camps, but they are not what a school is built on.</li></ul></div><div class="t-redactor__text">The takeaway for an operator: lead with programming and AI, and treat creative courses as complements — not as the foundation.</div><h2  class="t-redactor__h2">AI is the fastest-growing product</h2><div class="t-redactor__text">Artificial Intelligence enrollment grew roughly 4.5x in a single year — faster than any other course. It teaches children 12–15 to work with generative networks, prompt engineering, and to build their own projects across text, image, audio, video, and code.</div><div class="t-redactor__text">For an operator, the signal is clear: demand for AI literacy is now real at the school-age level, not just in adult upskilling, and a school that offers it has a product parents are actively looking for right now.</div><h2  class="t-redactor__h2">Your entry product depends on your market</h2><div class="t-redactor__text">The same brand sells a different mix of courses depending on where it operates. If you are opening in a specific market, this shapes what you should lead with.</div><div class="t-redactor__text"><strong>In the Middle East and North Africa</strong>, demand leans toward serious programming at the top of the ladder. Morocco is a clear example — Python accounts for nearly half of everything sold there, with families steering children into real programming earlier. Egypt sits at the other end: it is one of the youngest markets in the network, where demand concentrates in the youngest courses like Scratch and Digital Literacy: two neighboring markets, two very different opening products.</div><div class="t-redactor__text"><strong>In Latin America</strong> — one of the network's largest and most active regions — Game Design is the most popular course, with Python and Scratch close behind. Game Design serves as a strong on-ramp here: it brings children in early, moves them into serious programming, and demand runs across the full ladder.</div><div class="t-redactor__text"><strong>In Europe</strong>, demand is the most balanced of any region — Python, Game Design, and Scratch each take roughly a fifth of enrollment. A European school can open broadly rather than bet on a single anchor.</div><div class="t-redactor__text">Rule of thumb: younger markets open with Scratch and Digital Literacy; older, more programming-focused markets lead with Python or AI.</div><h2  class="t-redactor__h2">Two selling seasons, not one</h2><div class="t-redactor__text">Enrollment follows a clear rhythm, and knowing it is half of planning a school's year.</div><div class="t-redactor__text">The main intake is in September and October, when families sign up for the school year—this is by far the busiest stretch. A <strong>second, smaller wave comes in February</strong>, largely from students moving up to their next course after finishing a first block.</div><div class="t-redactor__text">Then there is <strong>summer</strong>. During the school year, camps and intensives are uncommon — but in summer they become the primary format, a distinct second selling season built on short holiday programs and, increasingly, AI intensives. For an operator, summer is not a gap to survive; it is a season to sell into with a different product.</div><h2  class="t-redactor__h2">How the classes are run</h2><div class="t-redactor__text">The model is consistent across all 90+ countries and easy to staff. Each course runs for 36 lessons, one lesson a week, in small groups of 4 to 15 children, with a hands-on project built in every session.       <turbo:content><![CDATA[<header><h1>Meet Azizah — Winner of the Gami Code Challenge</h1></header><figure><img alt="" src="https://static.tildacdn.com/tild3063-3333-4264-a234-643861353235/image_11.png"/></figure><div class="t-redactor__text">Every so often, a student reminds us exactly why we do this. Azizah, from our <strong><a href="https://www.facebook.com/AlgorithmicsSerembanMelaka" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">Algorithmics Seremban</a></strong> center, took first place at the Gami Code Challenge with a game she built in Scratch — and she almost didn't believe it when they called her school's name. We sat down with Azizah and her teacher, Shazwan, to hear how the project came together, what happened behind the scenes at the center, and what that winning moment actually felt like.</div><div class="t-redactor__text"><strong>Q1: Tell us about the project itself. What game or project did Azizah build to win the Gami Code Challenge? How did it work, how long did she spend on it, and what was the hardest part to get right?</strong><br /><br />In this game, you play as a bored traveler who sets off on an adventure. Along the way, you discover a hidden treasure. Will you waste the money, or make smart choices and become rich?<br /><br />The game has 2 chapters and 3 difficulty levels:<br /><br /><ul><li data-list="bullet">Chapter 1 – Travel (Easy): Learn how to choose the best travel package, avoid scams, and spend money wisely through fun maths and decision-making questions.</li><li data-list="bullet">Chapter 2 – Investment (Medium &amp; Hard): Test your skills with compound interest and investment challenges. The higher the level, the harder the questions!</li></ul><br /><strong>Q2: What did the coaching look like? How did your team prepare her? What did the teacher do that she couldn't have figured out on her own — the specific moments where the center made the difference?</strong><br /><br />Teacher Shazwan: We didn't need to prepare her much because she arrived very well prepared. The only challenge was that she was facing issues with her preparation. We asked her to share what she had prepared, and that night at the center, the team reviewed it to figure out what was going wrong with her approach. The next day, we all sat down together, including the student, to go through the solution.<br /><br />Her project involved Scratch games. While it is easy to create events in Scratch, that is also its worst nightmare: as the project progresses, events end up triggering everywhere instead of happening only when intended.<br /><br />To fix this, we practically restructured everything without changing the core context or functionality of her events. This completely flipped the program from a disoriented mess into a clean, well-functioning project. That is where the center really made the difference, I suppose.<br /><br /><strong>Q3: What was the moment of winning like? When the result was announced, what happened? How did Azizah react, what did she say, how did her family and the team respond?</strong><br /><br />We presented our project at 11:00 AM, and the results were announced on 25 June at around 4:00–5:00 PM. While we waited, we were nervous because we felt our presentation wasn't our best. We were hoping to place in the top three.<br /><br />When the third and second places were announced, and our school name was not called, we looked at each other in shock. That was when we realized we might have won first place. When our school's name was finally announced as the winner, we were extremely happy and couldn't believe it.<br /><br />After receiving the trophy, my partner and I were excited and shocked. Our teacher was also surprised because she didn't expect us to win. We later told her that we were actually nervous and thought our presentation had gone badly, but we didn't want to worry her. We all laughed about it together.<br /><br />I shared the good news with my mother, and she congratulated me and encouraged me to continue improving for future competitions. You take the weekly timetable, mark every block that is unsold, remove the blocks nobody in your market would ever buy, and multiply what remains by realistic group fill and average check. Then you subtract only the costs a new group actually adds.<br /><br />The result is a ceiling, not a forecast. Two things usually surprise owners who run it properly. The sellable inventory is far smaller than the empty space on the timetable. And the margin on that inventory is far higher than the margin on the business as a whole.<br /><br /><strong>The three numbers the audit produces:</strong><br /><br /><ol><li data-list="ordered"><em>Sellable empty blocks per week</em></li><li data-list="ordered"><em>Contribution per group per month</em></li><li data-list="ordered"><em>Current group fill rate as a percentage of room capacity</em></li></ol></div><h2  class="t-redactor__h2">7 ways to raise fill rate on empty slots</h2><h3  class="t-redactor__h3"><em>1. Cohort start with a floating weekday</em></h3><div class="t-redactor__text">The highest-impact change available, and it comes out of partner practice rather than a manual.<br /><br /><strong>Default model. </strong>A child enrolls into Saturday 11:00. That is their slot permanently. Saturday 11:00 has six students, Sunday 11:00 has six students. Two groups, two teacher slots, both look half-empty to every parent in the room.<br /><br /><strong>Cohort model.</strong> The parent pays monthly for four lessons, not for a weekday. Everyone joining in an intake starts on the same curriculum lesson. Every group in the center runs the same lesson number in the same week. The child attends once a week, in whichever slot has space.<br /><br /><strong><em>Consequences:</em></strong><br /><br /><ul><li data-list="bullet">A child may sit with different children in different weeks. Curriculum position is identical, so nothing breaks.</li><li data-list="bullet">Each slot has a hard cap. When it fills, the next booking goes to a slot with room.</li><li data-list="bullet">"Only four signed up, we cannot launch the group" stops existing. There is one cohort, distributed across days.</li><li data-list="bullet">Fill rate moves from around 50% of capacity to above 80%.</li></ul><br />Same students, same revenue, 528 less cost per month, 6,336 per year. Plus four blocks freed for the next intake, which is 40 more seats at no additional rent.<br /><br />Requires: per-slot caps in a booking system, curriculum lockstep, interchangeable teachers, and a hard one-lesson-per-week rule.<br /><br /><strong><em>Breaks when:</em></strong> groups drift out of curriculum sync, teachers are not interchangeable, parents were sold a specific teacher rather than a program, or a child is allowed two lessons in one week to catch up.</div><h3  class="t-redactor__h3"><em>2. A launch threshold and a merge rule</em></h3><div class="t-redactor__text">Write the numbers down and enforce them. Do not launch below 6, target 8-10, cap at 12. Below threshold, merge into an adjacent slot instead of running the group out of politeness.<br /><br />From the fill table: a group of 6 returns 273 per month, a group of 10 returns 548. Two groups of 6 consume two blocks and two teacher slots to produce 546, which is less than one group of 10. Half-full groups are the most expensive habit in this industry.</div><h3  class="t-redactor__h3"><em>3. One dedicated demo slot instead of trials scattered into live groups</em></h3><div class="t-redactor__text">Trial students placed into running groups slow the group down and make fill rate unreadable. Pull all trials into one fixed weekly block with its own teacher. Live groups keep pace, conversion rises because the demo is designed as a demo, and you get a clean weekly count of trials run.</div><h3  class="t-redactor__h3"><em>4. Sell weekday daytime as B2B</em></h3><div class="t-redactor__text">Weekday hours before 16:00 that retail will never buy can be sold as contracts: a school sends a class, a kindergarten buys an on-site block, an after-school program subcontracts the vertical. Lower price per student, but the hours were worth zero and it is one invoice instead of thirty.<br /><br />In a single-shift market this is usually the only way to monetize weekday mornings at all.</div><h3  class="t-redactor__h3"><em>5. Holiday intensives and camps</em></h3><div class="t-redactor__text">Eight to twelve weeks a year, the 20 dead weekday blocks become full-day prepaid inventory. A five-day intensive sold as a package often out-earns a month of regular groups from the same room.<br /><br />Price and schedule it as a separate product, not as a discount on regular classes.</div><h3  class="t-redactor__h3"><em>6. Double weekend slots for distance and retention</em></h3><div class="t-redactor__text">Two lessons back to back, roughly three hours with a break, once a fortnight instead of 90 minutes weekly.<br /><br />Be clear about what this does. It does not create capacity: the child still consumes four lessons a month, so block-hours are unchanged. What it does is halve the number of trips a parent makes, which is the main objection from families who live 30 minutes away. Treat it as a conversion and retention lever, and as a way to sell to a wider catchment.<br /><br />Works for ages 10 and up. Attention drops badly below that.</div><h3  class="t-redactor__h3"><em>7. A waitlist and a written make-up policy</em></h3><div class="t-redactor__text">Two rules that protect everything above.<br /><br /><ul><li data-list="bullet">Full slots get a waitlist, not an exception. A group at 13 is a group where retention starts falling.</li><li data-list="bullet">Missed lessons are made up in another slot in the same week, at the same curriculum position. Not banked, not refunded, not carried forward.</li></ul><br />Without a make-up rule, the cohort model in option 1 leaks within two months.</div><h2  class="t-redactor__h2">FAQ</h2><h3  class="t-redactor__h3">What is an empty slot audit?</h3><div class="t-redactor__text">A count of the teaching hours a center pays rent for but does not sell, converted into a contribution ceiling using realistic group fill and variable costs only. Divide by average monthly contribution across the ramp, not by mature contribution. A center reaching 3,288 per month at maturity but averaging 1,500 through the first year will show very different payback depending on which figure is used.</div><h3  class="t-redactor__h3">Why do most centers never reach the ceiling?</h3><div class="t-redactor__text">Because high fill rate depends on a curriculum that runs in lockstep, teachers interchangeable enough for a child to attend any day, per-slot caps enforced in software, and a working lead engine. Cutting a big problem into small ones</h3><div class="t-redactor__text">The first thing an 8-year-old learns is that anything overwhelming is a stack of things that aren't. Same move at 15, writing a design document before touching a line of code. Same move at 17, breaking a dataset into questions it can answer.</div><h3  class="t-redactor__h3">2. Being unbothered by things that don't work</h3><div class="t-redactor__text">Errors are taught as normal, on purpose, from session one. Build, test, find the fault, fix it, and go again. By the third course, the student is writing test cases for their own game because they expect it to break.</div><h3  class="t-redactor__h3">3. Making something a stranger can use</h3><div class="t-redactor__text">Interfaces, game rules, onboarding, a leaderboard, an obvious next step. Students learn that if the user can't figure it out, the product is wrong — not the user. This skill separates a coder from someone who ships.</div><h3  class="t-redactor__h3">4. Directing a machine instead of negotiating with one</h3><div class="t-redactor__text">In Python, that's code. In the AI course, it's structured prompting—worked examples, step-by-step reasoning, and supplying context a model doesn't have—applied to maths and logic problems, not just pretty pictures. Both are the same underlying habit: say precisely what you want.</div><h3  class="t-redactor__h3">5. Reading the machine's homework</h3><div class="t-redactor__text">AI students work through how a generative model is trained—pick the training examples, train it, generate from it, and see how selection shapes the output. Then they learn to spot synthetic video and audio, and to argue about where its use is legitimate. A child who has trained a model is much harder to fool by one.</div><h3  class="t-redactor__h3">6. Standing up and defending it</h3><div class="t-redactor__text">Every course ends in a presentation. Students critique each other's work against criteria, take the feedback, revise, and pitch. By their Python years, they pitch to a room the way a founder would.</div><h2  class="t-redactor__h2">What a child builds — and why they care</h2><div class="t-redactor__text">Nobody's 10-year-old comes home excited about loops. They come home because their friends are asking for the link.<br /><br /><strong>Visual Programming:</strong> the game the whole class plays at break. The main character looks like them. It has levels, a score, and a way to lose. They bring it in on a tablet and by Thursday there's a queue. Somebody asks for a harder level, and they go home and build one — the first time in their life a child has shipped a feature because a user requested it. Also within reach: an animated cartoon they can send to their grandmother, and a chatbot that quizzes classmates before a test.<br /><br /><strong>Game Design:</strong> a world their friends log into from home. They publish it, send a link, and that evening four friends are inside a world this child built — its terrain, its buildings, its hidden treasure, its traps. The leaderboard fills up with names they know. They can also make a multiplayer shooter and run an actual tournament, or a racing game with a vehicle they modeled themselves. The audience is real, and it changes everything about how hard a child is willing to work on a bug.<br /><br /><strong>AI:</strong> a game nobody believes a 13-year-old made. An interactive story with branching choices, art in a consistent style, a soundtrack, sound effects, and characters speaking in voices they generated. It looks like a studio made it. Friends play it and ask who did the artwork. And the one that matters more: three weeks later this child is the one in the family who spots the fake video going round the group chat, and can explain how it was made.<br /><br /><strong>Python:</strong> software other people actually use. A revision app they built to cram for their own exams — which their classmates then start asking for. A script that resizes and renames 400 holiday photos in about four seconds, run for a parent who would have done it by hand. An online quiz the whole class plays at once, on a site they built, backed by a database they designed. A data project answering a question they chose themselves — which streamer, which team, which app — cleaned, analyzed, and charted properly. A model they trained that predicts an outcome, entered into a public machine-learning competition against adults.<br /><br />By 17, that's a mobile app, a web application with logins and a database, a 3D game, and a trained model. Which is a junior developer's portfolio, assembled at school age.</div><h2  class="t-redactor__h2">The tools: what we use, and why they're free</h2><div class="t-redactor__text">Every tool in every course is free, or free at the tier students use.</div><h3  class="t-redactor__h3">Why free tools, not licensed educational software</h3><div class="t-redactor__text"><strong>It keeps software off the partner's P&amp;L.</strong> No per-seat license, no annual renewal, and no line item that scales with enrolment. For a franchise unit, that is the difference between a cost that grows with the business and one that doesn't exist.</div><div class="t-redactor__text"><strong>The student can keep working at home.</strong> Free tools run on whatever the family already owns. Practice happens between sessions, parents watch the work happen on the kitchen table, and progress is visible without anyone sending a report card. A tool that's exhausted by week six is worthless in a year-long course.</li><li data-list="bullet"><strong>A real publishing surface.</strong> Roblox isn't a sandbox that mimics a games platform — it is one. Students ship to actual players and learn what happens when someone who isn't their teacher tries to play their game.</li><li data-list="bullet"><strong>Industry-standard, not educational.</strong> Python, Pandas, Flask, SQL, HTML, and CSS are what working developers use. Nothing has to be unlearned later, and a portfolio built with them is legible to an employer or a university.</li><li data-list="bullet"><strong>Immediate visible feedback.</strong> Turtle, PyGame, and Scratch put the consequence of a line of code on the screen instantly. For a child, the shorter the gap between cause and effect, the faster they learn to debug.</li></ul></div><h2  class="t-redactor__h2">The portfolio isn't a year-end event</h2><div class="t-redactor__text">Every module ends in a finished artifact. Not one project in May — something to show every few weeks. Is this genuinely useful, or just a hobby?</h2><div class="t-redactor__text"><strong>Really asking:</strong> am I paying for something real?<br /><br /><em>Weak answer:</em> recites that coding is the future, which sounds like everyone else's pitch.<br /><br /><em>Strong partner:</em> names the actual skills, with subject plans in front of them. (In Algorithmics, learning outcomes are attached to every lesson and course.) Breaking a big problem into steps and staying with something after it breaks the first time. Then admit that most of these kids will not become programmers — and that this isn't the point, because the way of thinking shows up in school and later at work. What will my child actually be able to do afterward?</h2><div class="t-redactor__text"><strong>Really asking:</strong> show me something I can picture.<br /><br /><em>Weak answer:</em> "They will learn programming." Nothing to see there.<br /><br /><em>Strong partner:</em> names real things, by stage. First a game they can show a friend. Later an app. Later a project they present out loud. A child who can point at something they made does more for renewal than any pitch you give the parent.</div><h2  class="t-redactor__h2">6. Who teaches, and how are the teachers trained?</h2><div class="t-redactor__text"><strong>Really asking:</strong> will my child be safe and taught well?<br /><br /><em>Weak answer:</em> "our teachers are great," and nothing else.<br /><br /><em>Strong partner:</em> walks through how teachers are certified, that they're trained on how to teach and not only on the technology, how lessons get checked, and what happens when a teacher isn't working out. A parent is handing you their child. Detail is what settles them.</div><h2  class="t-redactor__h2">7. How large are the groups?</h2><div class="t-redactor__text"><strong>Really asking:</strong> will my child get attention?<br /><br /><em>Weak answer:</em> gives the number and stops.<br /><br /><em>Strong partner:</em> gives the number, then explains how the attention actually works. Each child moves at their own pace. The teacher-to-student ratio. And what a group gives that one-on-one cannot: other kids to build alongside.</div><h2  class="t-redactor__h2">8. What happens if we miss a lesson?</h2><div class="t-redactor__text"><strong>Really asking:</strong> my schedule is a mess — don't make me pay for that.<br /><br /><em>Weak answer:</em> reads out a strict policy in a tone that blames the parent.<br /><br /><em>Strong partner:</em> states the make-up rule clearly, shows where the materials sit between lessons, and makes it plain that missing one is normal. A rigid answer here gives a hesitant parent a reason to wait. (At Algorithmics, a child can usually join another group with the same schedule for that one lesson, or join online if they can't come in; otherwise the teacher covers the material individually before the next session. What you charge for isn't the content. It's the order of the lessons, a teacher who catches the exact moment a child gets stuck, and a group that pulls them back each week. The content is free everywhere. Getting a child to a finished project is not.</div><h2  class="t-redactor__h2">10. Do we have to sign a long contract? Can we get a refund?</h2><div class="t-redactor__text"><strong>Why it ends deals:</strong> fear of being trapped stops a parent who is otherwise ready to say yes.<br /><br /><strong>Really asking:</strong> I'm scared of getting locked into something I'll regret.<br /><br /><em>Weak answer:</em> pushes the annual plan and stays fuzzy on refunds. The parent hears a trap and stalls.<br /><br /><em>Strong partner:</em> makes the exit obvious. States the refund and trial terms straight, and offers a shorter first commitment if the model allows it. A parent who can see the way out signs sooner. Will this help with school?</h2><div class="t-redactor__text"><strong>Really asking:</strong> I want this to pay off academically.<br /><br /><em>Weak answer:</em> promises better grades. The course can't deliver that, and the parent will remember you said it.<br /><br /><em>Strong partner:</em> skips the grade promise. Says it builds logic, focus, and the confidence to sit with a hard problem — and that this shows up in maths and in how they work through things. Claiming less is more convincing here, because parents can hear the difference.</div><h2  class="t-redactor__h2">12. My child didn't seem that into it today. Should we still enroll?</h2><div class="t-redactor__text"><strong>Really asking:</strong> I want either reassurance or permission to walk away.<br /><br /><em>Weak answer:</em> insists the child loved it, against what the parent saw with their own eyes.<br /><br /><em>Strong partner:</em> asks the parent what they noticed. Separates first-day nerves from a real mismatch. Offers one more trial, or says outright that the timing isn't right. The partner who will walk away from a sale to stay honest is the one family comes back to—and the one they send their friends to.</div><h2  class="t-redactor__h2">The pattern behind the strong answers</h2><div class="t-redactor__text">Read the strong answers again, and the same few moves keep repeating. None of them are about talking more or wanting the sale harder.<br /><ul><li data-list="bullet"><strong>Answer the real question.</strong> The one they say out loud is usually a stand-in. Price often means fear of regret. Screen time often means guilt. Answer what's underneath.</li><li data-list="bullet"><strong>Agree, then turn it.</strong> Arguing with an objection makes it stronger. Agree with the feeling, then shift the frame to take the weight out of it.</li><li data-list="bullet"><strong>Point at the trial.</strong> The child just gave you proof in the room. The pattern: month 1 lost $700, month 2 lost $570, month 3 turned a $781 profit. Startup was $10,563, mostly borrowed, and the full quarter still ended $489 short. Month three is profitable; the quarter is not. Anyone promising a one-quarter payback has never run one.</div><div class="t-redactor__text">This is not a model or a projection. The plan was right about the amount and wrong about the timing — and timing is what closes new centers.<br /><br />Because of that prepayment, no rent appears in the monthly accounts for the rest of the quarter, which is one reason month three shows a profit. The real cost structure is $400/month heavier than the ledger suggests, and month seven will feel like a step backwards.<br /><br />What did appear from month two were the costs that ride along with a space: maintenance, waste collection, electricity, internet — small individually ($267 in month two, $310 in month three), and they only start once you are operating.<br /><br />The wider point: the center paid for space two different ways at once. Its own office cost ~$400/month plus utilities. The teaching space inside the host school cost 23% of revenue — more than four times as much in proportional terms. But the expensive one came with students attached. That is the trade, and it is usually the right one at the start.<br /><br />Before you sign anything, ask what the deposit and advance terms are, and hold that money separately from your equipment budget. By month three it took under 10%. Fixed payments are expensive when you are small.</li><li data-list="bullet"><strong>Utilities</strong> — $260–310/month, appearing from the month you open and rising as you use the space.</li><li data-list="bullet"><strong>Marketing</strong> — $100–270/month here, and only that low because of the venue partnership.</li><li data-list="bullet"><strong>The fit-out tail</strong> — carpentry, desks, switches, cables, a voltage regulator: $1,414 across three months, most of it after opening. Add 15–20% to your equipment budget for spending that lands once you think you are finished.</li><li data-list="bullet"><strong>Permits and paperwork</strong> — $214 over the quarter, $185 of it in a single month. Ask a local operator what a center actually pays, not a lawyer. Lawyers quote the statute; operators quote the queue.</li><li data-list="bullet"><strong>Municipal fees and bank charges</strong> — small, recurring, and never in anybody's business plan.</li></ul></div><h2  class="t-redactor__h2">What almost went wrong</h2><div class="t-redactor__text"><strong>One thing — and it's not about the product.</strong> A quarter of month-one billing was never collected. Rent, payroll and payroll taxes, royalties and licenses, materials, advertising, accounting, software, utilities, loan repayments. Recurring charges instead of long packages. A monthly auto-charge on or before the first of the month produces an even cash flow and removes the "sold in winter, delivered in summer" effect. Keep long packages as an option, not as the default tariff.<br /><br />2. A renewal campaign in April–May. Offer active families a discount for confirming the next school year, on the condition that they pay September in May or June. This is the single most effective tool for moving cash into the summer hole. It also locks in your base and lowers the September marketing budget.<br /><br />3. An annual tariff sold in May, not in September. In September, parents pay anyway. That is not when you need the money.<br /><br />4. A receivables policy. No lesson without payment. Automated reminders five and two days ahead, a call on day three of delay, a hold on day eight. Without a written policy, receivables quietly consume a month of reserve.<br /><br /><strong>Cost structure</strong><br /><br />5. Pay teachers per lesson delivered. Then the 46% drop in August load automatically reduces payroll too. Key teachers can keep a guaranteed minimum.<br /><br />6. Renegotiate rent. Three realistic options: a seasonal schedule with a reduced July–August rate, a percentage of revenue, or a rent holiday in exchange for extending the lease. An empty space costs the landlord more than a temporary discount — that is your negotiating argument.<br /><br />7. Move payment dates. Schedule large outgoing payments for the 8th–12th, after the main wave of collections has landed. A trivial change that removes half of all weekly deficits.<br /><br /><strong>Product and season</strong><br /><br />8. Summer intensives and camps. A 10–14-day format paid in full up front brings cash exactly in June and July. This is a cash instrument, not just a way to fill the timetable.<br /><br />9. An online format for the summer. Families travel, but they do not quit if they can continue online. The student stays in the base, collections continue, and you do not have to buy that student back in September.<br /><br />10. Classes hosted inside schools. A contract with a school for the academic year gives a predictable flow of students and full groups without renting your own space. Such a contract earns nothing over the summer, but it doesn't create fixed costs either.<br /><br />11. Do not cut advertising in August. Plan August as your heaviest marketing month and build that spend into the reserve in advance. Money saved in August comes back as a shortfall in September, with interest.<br /><br /><strong>Reserves and financing</strong><br /><br />12. A reserve and a credit line arranged early. The formula: two months of fixed costs plus your forecast summer deficit × 1.5. Build it in October–December and January–March, when cash is at its highest. Arrange the credit line or overdraft in winter—when you don't need it, and the bank is looking at strong numbers.
